Partnership & Service in Action: MLK Legal Day of Caring

January 26, 2016

Among the many tools a small business owner needs in their toolbox, legal support is among the most valuable. Legal advising can save headaches, stress, and money and provide peace of mind in running a small business. Despite the importance of legal services, legal fees are high, creating a barrier to vital information and assistance.

Wayfind, a Seattle based nonprofit that provides access to free business legal services for nonprofits and microenterprises, is one of Ventures’ key community partners. In addition to special events like the United Way MLK Legal Day of Caring and Main Street Legal Trainings, Wayfind provides a free monthly small business legal clinic to Ventures clients.  Entrepreneurs receive personalized, one-on-one legal advising on small business legal topics at the monthly legal clinics thus removing the barriers to this vital information and assistance.

On January 14th, 2016, Ventures, Wayfind, the United Way of King County and the Nonprofit Assistance Center partnered to create a special United Way Day of Caring in honor of the annual MLK Day of Service. This free legal clinic offered local entrepreneurs and nonprofit agencies a chance to meet one-on-one with experienced attorneys to have their legal questions answered.

The event featured 43 Wayfind volunteer attorneys and several law students from the University of Washington and Seattle University. This event served 35 local entrepreneurs, who had a chance to meet with attorneys and receive legal advice on a broad range of topics, such as:

  • Legal entity guidance (Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Limited Liability Corporation)
  • Incorporation
  • Contracts & Agreements
  • Employment Law
  • Intellectual Property (Patents, Logos, Trademarks)

Thank you to our partners Wayfind – Attorneys Supporting Communities , United Way of King County , Mercy CorpsMicrosoft, CIE, City of Seattle Office of Economic Development, Seattle University, University of Washington, Nonprofit Assistance Center, and to the attorneys for the valuable service you provided at this amazing event.
