Business Spotlight: The Troubadour Baker

April 28, 2017

The Troubadour Baker is a purveyor of finely crafted sweets and savories.

The Troubadour Baker“It was always my plan to go into business with my dad,” says Michael Seidel. After years of box office ticket sales, Michael says he “wanted the security of being in business for myself.”

Michael was thoughtful in his business approach from the very start. After finishing pastry school, he deliberately sought different kinds of roles in a number of local bakeries and restaurants to gain as broad a range of practical experience as possible. He first learned about Ventures through a booth at Renton Technical College’s annual BizFair. “From the start, everything I heard about Ventures matched my personal philosophies – especially the community aspect. We don’t have to be in competition with each other. We can help each other succeed.”

Michael Seidel started The Troubadour Baker in 2012 after taking Ventures’ Business Basics Course. He’s also completed our Financial Management and Packaged Foods courses. Michael has received and repaid three Ventures micro-loans. Michael is in the process of looking for a permanent storefront location for The Troubadour Baker, seeking funding assistance through our Business Builder Loan.

“There’s just no other way to get stuff going,” Michael says. “You need someone to tell you what you need to know to succeed in small business. Ventures does that. And gives me the reassurance I’m on the right track.”

Michael’s business model focuses on weekly CSA-style delivery boxes, specialty cake orders, and packaged foods in local specialty shops, including the Ventures Marketplace, our retail store and incubator in Pike Place Market. His plans for growth include increased focus on specialty cakes and expanding his products into the wholesale market.
