Ventures is a Seattle-based nonprofit, founded in 1995, that empowers aspiring entrepreneurs with limited resources and unlimited potential to improve their lives through small business ownership. We provide access to business training, capital, coaching, incubation, and hands-on learning opportunities for entrepreneurs. We serve those in our community for whom traditional business development services are out of reach, with a focus on women, people of color, immigrants, and individuals with low incomes. Our ultimate goal is to support individuals to increase their income potential, achieve long-term financial stability, and provide for their families, and enrich their communities through small business ownership.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Community Foundation of Snohomish County, this position will oversee the launch of our pilot expansion of the strategic and operational management of Ventures business training & coaching programs in Snohomish County in an integrated service model. This position is responsible for ensuring that training and coaching programs meet the needs of microbusiness owners that Ventures serves and embraces the values of diversity, client success, and innovation into services delivered, ultimately fulfilling on the Ventures mission to alleviate poverty through microenterprise development. This position is based out of Everett, WA but requires some travel to Ventures main office in Seattle, WA.

This position is fully funded until December 31st, 2020 with the strong possibility and intent of securing funding for continuation.


Training & Coaching Program Strategy, Development and Implementation (60%)

  • Responsible for setting strategy, co-designing, and the delivery of high-quality, robust business training & business coaching programs to support Ventures clients in collaboration with the Director of Programs & leadership team.
  • Works collaboratively with Director of Programs and program team to create annual training and coaching program goals and calendars that align with meeting client needs and fulfilling on program deliverables set forth by the strategic plan and other funding opportunities.
  • Works collaboratively with Seattle-based program staff on marketing coaching services to Ventures clients, troubleshooting coaching relationships, and building out a toolbox of coaching tools, policies, and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with Program Coordinator to ensure professional, efficient logistics execution for training programs.
  • Develops, executes, and monitors progress against Ventures strategic plan, annual department plans, and budgets for training & coaching programs, in collaboration with program staff and the Ventures leadership team.
  • Collaborates with Impact & Data Specialist to integrate a culture of evaluation into training and coaching programs; works with Director of Programs to design and deploy annual client satisfaction survey, supports in data collection processes, and supports program staff in tracking client activities.
  • Interacts closely and positively with Ventures leadership team and Board of Directors to highlight successes and opportunities within training and coaching programs through storytelling, presentations, and other communication channels.
  • Teach a variety of Business Trainings throughout the year, including but not limited to Orientations, Business Basics Courses, specialized courses, and workshops both in English and Spanish.
  • Work one-on-one with Business Owners after the Business Basics Course to connect them with specialized services.
  • Maintain a lens of equity, continuing to align all program materials and offerings in English & Spanish. This includes the coordination of translation services when needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Programs Outreach & Communications (25%)

  • Develop and implement regular outreach and program promotion, including: marketing materials, speaking engagements, correspondence, etc.
  • Participate in opportunities to discuss or advertise our programs to external parties such as community partners, media outlets, funders, etc.
  • Develop strategies to promote Specialized Services within the scope of the Everett program.
  • Work collaboratively with Marketing & Communications Manager on designing and developing effective marketing collateral for Ventures training programs.
  • Oversee the content creation for e-mail Marketing Campaigns related to clients & community partners. Includes collaboration for the Ventures’ monthly Small Business Services Bulletin and quarterly Community Partner Newsletter in both English & Spanish.
  • Assist with the recruitment and screening of program participants into appropriate programs to meet program goals, grant deliverables, client needs, etc.
  • Regularly track outreach efforts in Little Green Light, Ventures CRM.
  • Create an outreach structure with Business Coaches to recruit more BBC graduates into Specialized Services.
  • Participate in opportunities to discuss or advertise our programs to external parties such as community partners, media outlets, funders, etc.
  • Works closely with Development Team to identify opportunities between training & coaching programs, volunteers, and fund development activities as well as funding proposals and requests.
  • Collaborates with Advocacy & Communications team on external communications, program related marketing projects, and advocacy opportunities that integrate & serve Ventures clients.

Community Building and Collaboration: (15%)

  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships and cross-sector partnerships that complement Ventures mission, programs, and goals through attending meetings as a representative of Ventures and convening partners to identify opportunities to collaborate.
  • Be a participant of the All Families are Ready (AFAR) action team and of the Village on Casino Road.
  • Attend monthly AFAR collaborative meetings.
  • Using 2-generation approaches and collaborating with other AFAR partners to support Venture clients with young children and to further the mission of the AFAR action team.
  • Attend monthly Village Circles to build relationships with and to coordinate with other Village tenants and partners.
  • Building capacity in Restorative Practices. The Program Manager will attend a 2-day Restorative Practices training within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Building capacity in racial equity approaches and undergoing training in the 5 Dimensions of Equity within the first year of the Program Manager’s employment.


Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Experience of and passion for microbusiness start-up and operation
  • Creating effective adult education, training, and business coaching programs that cater to multiple learning styles, including curriculum development, facilitation, and teaching & co-active coaching methodologies.
  • Staff, Contractor, & Volunteer supervision
  • Fundamentals of strategic planning, nonprofit budgeting, program coordination and project management
  • Principles and practices of nonprofit volunteer management

Ability to:

  • Engage compassionately and effectively with a broad diversity of people, including immigrants, refugees, people of color, and those with low incomes
  • Plan and execute high-quality programs that drive towards client success.
  • Be detail oriented and have the ability to understand a vision and implement from start to finish.
  • Communicate effectively and compellingly both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to use a variety of technology including MS Office Suite, cloud based applications, and database software to extract relevant data, and analyze data for reporting purposes
  • Manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and cross-collaborate with other departments.
  • Effectively manage and lead teams and individuals through coaching & mentorship to fulfill on Ventures mission and values.

Experience and Training

  • Fluent or bilingual Written and verbal Spanish language skills required
  • 5+ years of business experience, including at least 3 years of experience working with program design/management, is required.
  • 3+ years of working with low-income individuals, specifically communities of color, minorities, low-wealth individuals, and underrepresented & underserved communities.
  • Current or previous small business ownership is highly desired.
  • Experience in microenterprise development, small business development, asset building, financial empowerment, or related industry.

Physical Demands

  • The employee must be able to operate a computer and other office equipment, speak and listen on the telephone, and accurately see and interpret complex written information and columns of numbers
